DINOSAUR FOOTPRINTS COLORWORK CROCHET PATTERN

This pattern can be used as a back cover for the dinosaurs quiet book (the pattern is in my book Crochet Activity Toys) or in any other project. If you use thicker yarn you can even crochet a pillow case (make 2 pieces and join them together).

Materials and tools for crocheting

  • Yarn of light brown and brown colors (or any other colors). I used 4-ply sport weight yarn – YarnArt Jeans (55% cotton + 45% acrylic), 174 yards (160m), 1.76 ounces (50 g).
  • Hook size (D/3) 3 mm (or another suitable for yarn).
  • Tapestry needle, scissors.

Abbreviations

  • sc — single crochet
  • ch — chain stitch
  • BLO — crochet stitches back loops only

Instructions

Foundation chain: Using D/3 (3mm) hook and light brown, ch35.

Row 1: Beginning in 2nd ch from hook, 34 sc in back bumps of chain, ch1, turn.

Rows 2-3: 34 sc, ch1, turn. (2 rows)

Next, the pattern is worked using the “cut and tie” method following written instruction or chart:

Cut and tie method: After changing color, cut the old color yarn. Tie the old and new color ends together on the wrong side and continue working with the new color,so you will always work with one yarn ball. The cut and tie method is easier than intarsia with four or more color sections. On the right side it looks the same as intarsia.

How to work with the chart:

  • The numbers on the cells indicate balls of yarn, crossed out numbers – cut and fasten off the yarn.

  • 1 cell = 1 sc.

  • Underlined cells (for example, in the 4th row) – crochet stitches back loops only.

  • The yarn colors must be changed in the last sc of the old color.

  • !!! But if there is a * sign in the cell, then crochet the sc completely with the old color, the next sc is crocheted with a new color (i.e. the first sc of the new color will have the loop of the old color, and the post will be a new color).

  • After changing colors, always leave the yarn on the wrong side. Here, the even rows are the right side, the odd rows are the wrong side, that is, in even rows – leave the yarn behind your work, and in odd rows – in front of your work.

  • L = sc in light brown
  • B = sc in brown
  • 5 B = 5 sc in brown, on the fifth sc, change the yarn color.
  • 5 B* = 5 sc in brown, completely crochet all five sc in brown.
  • ws – wrong side
  • rs – right side

Cut the brown yarn. Next, crochet all the rows in the light brown color.

Row 37: 34 sc, ch1, turn.

Row 38: 34 sc.

Make borders as for other pages or with your favorite method (for other projects).

Fasten off and secure all the ends on the wrong side.

If your page/piece looks wavy, then you could try to steam it and give it the correct square shape.
